The Unyielding Spirit of Max Verstappen
Formula 1 driver Max Verstappen is known for his prowess on the track and his ability to challenge
the best drivers in the world. However, his journey to F1 stardom is marked by a turbulent and
challenging childhood.
Family
Max Verstappen was born on September 30, 1997, in Hasselt, Belgium. Son of the Dutchman Jos
Verstappen, former Formula 1 driver, and the Belgian Sophie Kumpen, a kart driver. He had a
younger sister, Victoria. He obtained Dutch nationality when he came of age.
Karting
A karting driver since he was four years old, during 2007 he won the Dutch Minimax championship.
Two years later he joined Team Pex Racing, with which he won the Flemish Minimax championship
and the Belgian KF5 championship. In 2010 he was signed by CRG to compete in world and
European championships. During 2011 he won the WSK Euro Series and the WSK Master Series in
the KF2 class. In 2013, he came first in the KF and KZ European Championships. At the age of
fifteen he won the 2013 KZ world championship in Varennes-sur-Allier, France, in KZ1, the highest
category of karting.
Pilot
His first experience in a racing car was at the Pembrey circuit on October 11, 2013. In that same
year he tested for several Formula Renault 2.0 teams.
Formula 3
During 2014, he participated in European Formula 3 with the Van Amersfoort Racing team. This
season he won ten races, finishing third in the championship. In August of that same year, he joined
the Red Bull Junior Team and six days later, he was confirmed as one of Scuderia Toro Rosso's
drivers for 2015.

Formula 1
At the 2015 Australian Grand Prix, at the age of seventeen, he became the youngest driver to
compete in Formula 1. On March 29, he was the youngest driver to score points in F1, at the Grand
Prix. from Malaysia. He began the 2016 season with the Italian team before being promoted to
parent team Red Bull Racing after four races as Daniil Kvyat's replacement. At eighteen, he won
the Spanish Grand Prix, being the youngest driver and the first Dutch driver to win a Formula 1
Grand Prix. Over the next five seasons, he scored several more victories, including the first for a
Honda-powered driver since 2006. He finished the 2019 and 2020 championships in third position.
On 23 May 2021, he became the first Dutch F1 driver to lead the World Championship, after
winning the Monaco Grand Prix. He signed a contract extension with Red Bull until the end of the 2028 season. Although neither party mentioned amounts, it is reported that Verstappen would earn between 40 and 50 million euros per year.
World Champion
Verstappen was proclaimed world champion on December 12, 2021, at the Abu Dhabi Yas Marina
GP. The Dutchman is crowned after an unforgettable race, decided on the last lap, his first title,
with which he puts an end to the golden era of Lewis Hamilton after an overtake in turn five, where
Mad Max finally left the seven-time champion behind
Second championship
In the 2022 season, Verstappen achieved pole position, the sprint and then won the race during the
Emilia-Romagna Formula 1 Grand Prix in Imola. During the Canadian Grand Prix, he secured pole
position and finished first in the race ahead of the Spaniard Carlos Sainz. In the Austrian Grand Prix,
he achieved pole position, and, in the race, he was the first to reach the finish line. During the
Hungarian Grand Prix, he won thanks to a good pit stop strategy. After a three-week summer break,
Verstappen participates in the Belgian Formula 1 Grand Prix changing several engine parts, for
which he received a penalty on the grid. During qualifying, he set the fastest time, but due to his grid
penalty, Verstappen started the race from 14th place. During the competition he reached first place in just twelve laps. In the end, Verstappen won the race with a 17-second lead over number
two Checo Pérez. At the Dutch Grand Prix, he took pole position and after a good start, he was in
the lead, but on lap 55, the safety car came on track and Verstappen made his third pit stop coming
out in second place behind Lewis Hamilton. In October, at the Japanese GP, Max Verstappen was
crowned world champion with a new victory. He also won in the United States and Mexico and
concluded the season with one more in Abu Dhabi. Finally, he added 454 points, compared to the
308 of Charles Leclerc, who won three races and was runner-up, while Sergio Pérez was third with
305.
Third championship
He was crowned Formula One world champion for the third time, winning the title in the sprint of
the Qatar Grand Prix, a race held on October 7, 2023. Verstappen's victory was a moment that
seemed inevitable from the first race of the season, when he led the grid from start to finish at the
Bahrain Grand Prix. He had so far won 13 of 16 races that season and needed to finish sixth or
better in the sprint. The team sealed its second consecutive constructors' championship in the
Bahrain Grand Prix the previous month with six races remaining.
